Statement of Support
-
• We acknowledge that an injustice was done to 1,098 African American inhabitants of Forsyth County, Georgia, in 1912 and afterward, when they were forced to leave the county immediately under threat of violence. Most were farmhands, but records show there were 58 families who were landowners.
• No one alive today is responsible for the sins of our ancestors, but we do care about the future of children whose families were negatively impacted by this injustice.
• As followers of Jesus we support the idea of a scholarship fund for qualified descendants of those expelled from the county in 1912.
• This is an act of love that recognizes that an injustice was done and demonstrates that we feel compelled to help. This is not righting a wrong, giving justice to those offended, or any form of reparation but simply an act of love that does for a few what we wish we could do for everyone.
